Why Would a PEO Pay Us? How We Work, Like a Mortgage Broker

Written by Stephen Davis | October 12, 2026

When we tell a trucking company owner our review costs nothing, the next question is usually some version of "What's the catch?"

It is a fair question. Nobody works for free, and you should know how the people advising you get paid. Here is the straight answer.

How does a mortgage broker work?

When you buy a house, you can go bank to bank, fill out the same forms over and over, and try to compare offers that all look different. Or you can use a mortgage broker.

A broker takes one application to many lenders. The offers come back, and the broker lays them out so you can compare. When you pick one and close, the lender pays the broker. You do not.

We do the same thing with PEOs.

How does it work with us?

  1. We start with a short conversation. It takes about 5 minutes to get started. No payroll reports are needed up front.
  2. You give us one set of papers. When it is time for quotes, we ask for your payroll report, your claims history and a few details about your drivers and job types. Once, not over and over.
  3. We take them to PEOs that work with trucking. Many PEOs do not take trucking. Knowing which ones do is a big part of our job.
  4. We show you the quotes side by side. Same layout for each, in plain words, so you can see what is really different: cost, workers' comp, benefits and how each one handles your drivers.
  5. You decide. If none of them beat what you have, we will tell you. Sometimes the answer is to keep what you have.
  6. If you choose a PEO, that PEO pays us. You do not get a bill from SE Davis.

You only sign if you like a quote.

Does it cost more to go through a broker?

No. Your price is the same as if you went to the PEO on your own.

It can even be better. We know what each PEO looks for, we send them a complete, organized picture of your business, and we push back on the first number. A PEO also knows we are showing you other options side by side. That tends to bring their best price to the table.

Here is how the two compare:

Going direct to a PEO Going through SE Davis
Quotes One PEO, one quote Several PEOs that take trucking, side by side
Paperwork You fill out each PEO's forms yourself One set of papers, and we handle the rest
Who you're talking to The PEO's rep, who represents the PEO Us. We are not tied to any one PEO.
Price The PEO's price The same price, and we push for a better one
After you sign You call the PEO's service team We stay on, help fix problems and check again at every renewal
Cost to you Nothing extra Nothing extra

What happens after I sign?

Once your mortgage closes, you probably never hear from your broker again. This is where we are different.

After you join a PEO, we stay on. At every renewal, we look again to make sure the price and service still make sense, and we negotiate for you. If something goes wrong, like a payroll mistake, a claim that is not moving or a question nobody is answering, you call us. We help get it fixed. We are on your side of the table the whole time.

Whose side are you on?

When someone is paid by a company, it is fair to wonder whose side they are on. That is why it matters that SE Davis is not owned by or tied to one PEO. We work with several. Our job is to find the one that fits your business, not to push one product.
